April Camp Video Review

37th Kingswood Scouts took to the field in Tewkesbury for the first drill camp of the season. Working on the opener, all sections made good progress throughout the weekend pushing the boundaries to put the first 4 minutes of the show on the field. The corps managed to get to 5.30pm on Sunday but were beat by the rain, flash floods and thunder storms that started at 4.00pm. With weeks to go until the first show, the corps will be focusing on putting out the initial framework of the programme and building on what is going to be a strong contender for 2008. A big thanks has to go out to all our support staff for making the weekend possible with a special mention for Steve B who is in line for the yorkie bar award.

February Music Camp Review (MJ)

Saturday 16th February 2008

So the day begins with Tim picking me up after forgetting his sleeping bag and having to go back for it!!! On the way down Tim, Chris Jackson and myself had a good old sing song and mental rave to the classic sandstorm track! Man that was mental! So first things first everyone has arrived the annex and were just dumping our bedding and getting the gear unloaded to begin the first day of drumming. This year we have an all new warm-up book that we learnt during the winter season and during this morning's warm up everything started to click, There are some really sweet sounds coming out during warm ups but ill let you know more about them when you come and see us warming up before our first show :o) So warm up book done and already it's shaping up to be a really good day. The focus of today was to chunk through the opener and start cleaning and getting the dynamics clarified ready for ensemble with the brass line. This went really well with some great playing and some not so great but there was laughter all around and by this point im absolutely loving it.

So lunch comes and the rush to Morrison's for a rustler burger is on! In the end we ended up with 2 burgers and 3 chicken sandwiches get in with the rustler! Anyway back to drumming lunch finished and we worked on the 2nd half of the closer which went again really well and helped to clarify the dynamics etc within the piece. So we are now at the evening putting it all together with the brass line, we only worked on the first half of the opener tonight but went really well and was nice to hear how this all fitted with the brass line! Really enjoying this years show so far and cant wait to get it on the field.
So rehearsal done and it was on to Guitar Hero tournament which I didn't get involved in as they all play like Jimmy Hendrix! So off to bed in the freezing cold hall dreaming of bacon sandwiches.
Sunday 17th Feb 2008

So here we are at the last day of camp and we wake up to bacon sandwiches, cereals, fruit, & croissants couldn't ask for more! So we start today with the warm up book again and every time we play it just keeps getting better and better really like it! Everyone is in hi spirits and really up for today so should be a good one! After the warm up book we ran the opener a few times just to make sure that was still in everyone's heads and then we went on with learning part to the closer score that has been written! We broke off in to sections and started to learn it we then broke for lunch ready to put it all together as a line! Were back after lunch and putting the closer together this is going really well and man does this score rock! I couldn't stop smiling really enjoy this piece! The tenors are absolutely insane!!!!! Luckily we got to do more ensemble this afternoon with the brass line and put the closer and 2nd part of the opener together it culminated in a full run of the opener & ballad and a 45 second segment of the closer! This went really well but there is still loads of room for improvement and tweaks to be done here and there! So it's end of the weekend and to some it up WOW WOW WOW!!!! Love the music, Love the people, Love Band what more can I say!

Thanks to all that made this camp such a success behind the scenes you will always be loved!
Right over the next few weekend I will be with Vintage and so will the majority of the line so I shall speak to you all again soon when I return from the CGN Goes competition for our next rehearsal on the 9th of March.

2008 January Drum Camp Report

The percussion section met this past weekend and took over Tewkesbury Youth Club, which would be their home for the weekend. Many members were interested to see the new refit of the centre due to the floods of last summer. “It was nice to be back to normal for camps and the Youth Club was very comfortable with the new furniture and double glazing.” Said (percussion caption head) Carl Curtis.

Once all the members had arrived we unloaded the truck, sorted the food out and then sat down to have a quick meeting to set out the goals for the forthcoming year. On conclusion of the meeting it was off to the sections to crack on with the mission for the weekend to get the opener down. The Battery worked through the warm up book and they also worked through the new cadence. The frontline worked through their warm-up book before starting on the 2008 Opener. The frontline members and staff would like to say a big well done to Nic who has made the big leap from Cadets to Senior Corps this year. She done an excellent job with the music and has settled into the line really well.

Some of the members decided to experience the local delicacy which is know as “Burger Star” I think Dan’s Pizza must still be cooking! After lunch we continued with the opener. Well done to our writers for writing what is another good book. The battery ensembled what they had learnt in the 4th quarter as well as going back and working the 1st and 2nd parts. They then moved in with the frontline for our first Percussion ensemble of the year and the 2008 show. Both sections worked parts 1 and 2 of the opener and for this time of year the music did fit well and went together nice and easily.

Once everybody was ready we left for the traditional Percussion meal out down the local Restaurant. Once again, as it seems every year, there is always a story to tell from this part of the weekend. It is really good to sit down as a section and get to know the line for the year. MJ once again proved to be the evenings entertainment, cheeking the bar staff so that he could have a go on the kids play area. We have never seen the line move so fast when they agreed to allow us in. Seeing MJ and Lindz going down the kids slide was rather amusing. Once back at the youth club we found a secret WII champion or should I say Cheat. Dan our new top bass player, seemed to annihilate everyone he came up against on any of the games. We later found out that he knew all the cheats. YOU SEE DAN CHEATERS NEVER PROSPER!

On Sunday we woke and had breakfast cooked by members of the alumni Dave and Candice. Thanks guys, you saved us a job. Watching Match of the Day and a cup of Tea was a pretty good wake up really after the day before. After breakfast it was back into sections to finish the opener off. The battery quickly warmed up and then broke off into sections. Once again Carl and Andy gave us another classic phrase that took us a while to get our heads around. It was definitely getting there by the end of this session. After warming-up, the frontline spent the morning re-capping the Opener and working particularly on the runs that Dave Walter has challenged them too - thanks :-)

After our lunch of Jacket potato’s and the build up to the Man U match we cracked on with battery ensemble piecing the last part of the opener together. Once we got to the end we were then able to play part 4 over and over and build up the tempo. Once again we moved in with the frontline to ensemble the opener. We had a couple of ex members turn up to watch - good to see you both. We then cracked on with running through the opener for the first time, which mainly looked at the 4th part and due to the speed we broke this section down to line all the parts up.

The weekend was a very big success, we achieved a lot musically and had a great time doing it. I can wait until next rehearsal to ensemble what we have learnt with the horn line. Tom Lennox-Brown (Bass Drum Section Leader) commented “The weekend was excellent, another well organised drum camp by the staff. As well as the hard work and effort during the day the social aspect of the percussion section in the evening was great, the two sections getting along very well and having a great rapport. I think this year is going to turn out to be a great year for the 37th Percussion section” The staff was very proud of the achievements of the weekend and hopes to keep the momentum going into the season. Also a mention must go to the new members who worked very hard and coped with the weekend very well".
